WordPress CaptionKiller plugin

The WordPress CaptionKiller plugin disables the bad and poorly implemented image captioning feature introduced in WordPress 2.6. Read this for a brief explanation why this feature is bad and poorly implemented.

This plugin only works with WordPress 2.6.1 and newer. It will not work with any version prior to 2.6.1. Please be aware that the plugin doesn’t change existing posts in your database, but will only disable the captioning feature for composing new posts.

Download & Installation

  1. Download the WordPress CaptionKiller plugin: wp-captionkiller.txt
  2. Rename it to “wp-captionkiller.php”
  3. Upload the renamed file to your wordpress plugins directory
  4. Activate the plugin “WordPress CaptionKiller” in your plugins admin panel
  5. That’s it! The image captioning feature is now deactivated

  1. Thank you! Thank you! I really needed a way to keep the alt tags and NOT show captions. This is just what I needed!

  2. I agree with this post wholeheartedly. If you don’t add a caption too, Wordpress should print out an empty ALT tag. I really don’t understand why they would give you the option to add invalid code, seeing as they are using XHTML strict.

    Thanks for the plugin.

  3. Sorry, just to follow up, is there a way of making the ALT compulsory instead of the title? I wish I knew more about PHP!

    Thanks again

  5. Thank you for the plugin, but is there any way to make it working under the WP 2.6.2. I’ve installed it, but after activation nothing happens, the caption still appears under my images, and sometimes it’s a longer one, ruins the entire design… so I had to remove it :-( …. any suggestions?

    Thanks again

  6. @5: The plugin works fine in version 2.6.2 for me (and should also work in 2.6.3, though i haven’t tested it yet). Please be aware that the plugin doesn’t change existing posts in your database, but will only disable the captioning feature for composing new posts.
