The browser formerly known as Phoenix

Firebird 0.7, the browser formerly known as phoenix, has been updated to firefox 0.8. I grabbed a copy yesterday and have been using it all day. I didn’t experience any significant changes, but certainly enjoy that it now comes with a windows installer and the new download manager.
The most obvious change is its namechange, however. Dave shea is confident in the new brand, adam gessaman is a little worried that mozilla holds none of the important firefox top-level-domains, but the thing i personaly struggle with most is the frequent change of icons. To date, i went through 4 different icons for mozilla firebird and every time it changed it took some time to get used to it.
When i first installed mozilla firebird in the old v0.6 days, it came with an ugly mozilla icon which i utterly despise (the one with a godzilla head, not the new one with the minimalistic m). I knew that i wouldn’t use a browser with such an annoying icon on a daily basis no matter how superior it was to internet explorer and that there ought to be a better alternative. I quickly stumbled across the winged-earth icon by arvid axelsson, which i like quite a lot more. When i upgraded to v0.7 the firebird icon changed to the minimalistic, flat, red flames icon, which is still my favourite one. Now with the renaming and upgrade to v0.8, the icon changed again to the fox cuddling the blue planet. It’s certainly nice, but with the very significant, unique look of the red-flames icon i got used to, i’m afraid it’ll take quite a while to adjust. I hope they manage to stick to the name and (more important) the icon this time.

Site upgrade

Now that all exams are passed i finally found the time to upgrade my blog to wordpress 1.0.1. It’s been out for two weeks, but i couldn’t move myself to update the templates till now. It took me about 2 hours to get everything up and running again. Love the new admin interface, it’s a lot nicer than the old one, but best of all, craft-free permalink urls!
Things appear to be working fine, but if you encounter any problems, please let me know.

Eastern Standard Tribe released

I recently mentioned cory doctorows “down and out in the magic kingdom” and how much i enjoyed. Today (or perhaps yesterday, damn being offline) his second novel “eastern standard tribe” has been released, again both as hardcopy and creative commons licensed, drm-free ebook. I just started cryptonomicon yesterday and i’m fairly certain it’ll keep me occupied for a while, but i’m really looking forward to reading this. Go here, grab a copy and give it a read.

The last few days

Just a quick rundown to get it all out of my head and reboot:
Had an annoying exam (multiple choice, bleh!) on friday, followed by heavy drinking and partying throughout the night. Learning for the exam disconnected me for a few days, so i had some 500 unread items in my newsreader on this utterly slow and headachy saturday to catch up on. Sunday brought more catching up followed by watching superbowl (great game!) with friends the whole night. In a few minutes i’m off to fixing a friends pc.
Some funny/interesting stuff i enjoyed:

…and lots of stuff i forgot while writing this.
