Made some minor changes to the layout

After some testing of my current layout in mozilla firebird, internet explorer and konqueror i noticed that only firebird displayed the site as intended, while konqueror had some minor problems and internet explorer had some major problems. I now made some changes to my css; previously the menu was floated to the right and the rest of the main body was stretched using min-height (necessary when displaying a single blog post). Only firebird rendered the min-height declaration properly, while internet explorer had some serious problem with the floating menu as well. I now positioned the menu absolute, but still rely on min-height for correct viewing results. Of course i could have avoided all problems by using one single table in my layout, but as we all know, tables for layout are stupid.
The site should still look the same in firebird and konqueror, while improving internet explorer compatibility. The site is perfectly usable with any browser i tested, but for best results i highly recommend you to use firebird, not only because it renders my site correctly, but rather because it’s really a great browser (possibly even the best, though i have to admit i don’t know safari). I’ll try to fix the remaining problems, but can’t make any promises yet. Perhaps i’ll also do an alternative, much simpler layout for increased compatibility with older browsers. I’m quite sure this site looks like crap in netscape navigator 4 and internet explorer 5, but i don’t have any of those two at hand to confirm my assumptions.

This site is from now on WordPress-powered

As mentioned a few days earlier i’ve decided to switch to wordpress as my blog cms of choice, and now i’m finally done with the transition. All in all it took me about three days to get the templates finished and the conversion scripts for the old database written (actually not three full days, but rather three days of sporadic work).
There’s still lots of stuff to do: i’m not quite satisfied with the archives-pages and i have to hack some code together to keep the old permalinks more or less working, but right now i’m quite satisfied. WordPress really looks and feels great and i’m very happy that i finally got a new toy to play with.
Along with the new cms i now have a nice looking sidebar to fill. I’ve moved the “about” and “contact” stuff there. Furthermore there are links to the archives, rss feeds, a search box, and a new section “list-linkage” where i’ll post noteworthy links i stumble across but don’t feel the need to write about. Currently there’s now rss-feed for those links available, but i hope the fine folks who create and improve wordpress will fix that sooner than later.
Welcome wordpress, good bye old-blog-scripts, it was a great time both working on and with you for almost a year, but i won’t miss you too much – wordpress is just so much better.
Update: most old inbound links should work now again thanks to some simple page redirects. If you encounter any broken links or other problems, please let me know.

Nokia 6600 reviews

My current fav-phone reviewed @infosync, @mobile burn. After reading those i’m not so sure anymore that i could justify an upgrade from my current n7650 to an n6600.
Update: russell beattie shares his first impressions.

Switching to WordPress?

I currently think about switching to wordpress as my blog cms. It does anything i want, is small and lightweight, looks pretty nice and there’s a strong community growing around it. Now i just have to get those darn conversion scripts written and the templates redesigned…

Shure QuietSpot headset for mobile phones

Shure headset for mobile phones. Not that i expect this to sound half as nice as their headphones are said to be, but then again such high quality sound would be a complete waste for a phone head set. I can imagine that the noise cancelation could be a huge advantage over most competitors. Definitely the headset to go with right now.

Site redesigned

After playing around with new stylesheets over the last few months i finally made the transition to a totally new design. Right now i like it quite a lot, i think it’s pretty straight forward and simple. It took me a while to realize that people who clearly aren’t gifted with design skills (like me) have to stop playing pretend – i’m not a designer, and i’m not ashamed of it.
Some things might be a little rough at the edges and i’ll surely have to tweak things here and there a bit, but if you encounter any serious flaws, please contact me to let me know.
Btw, more things to come, i’m currently playing around with several new script ideas. Let’s see how long it takes me to get this stuff online.

Slight disappointment

I’m somewhat disappointed that my recent rant didn’t make it to this list.

MobiTV – who cares?

When i first read about sprints new mobitv service i thought it would be great to have something like this here in austria.
Then i realised that i’ve totally stopped watching tv and apparently i’m not alone. Considering how hard tv sucks these days all envy is gone. I prefer picking up my favorite movies and tv series on dvd. Video-on-demand on a cellphone at reasonable prices (read: less than 10 euro for a movie), now that would be tempting.

New Sony stuff

New sony stuff to drool after: the vaio pcg-x505, a really nice subnotebook which weighs less than 800g and is less than a centimeter thick (via gen kanai) and the pcva-hvp20 personal video player. I wouldn’t dump my ipod for that one, but i think it’d complement it quite well.
